Honda Ridgeline or Toyota Tacoma -- Which New Pickup is Right for You?

Both Honda Ridgeline and Toyota Tacoma are compact trucks with mid-size aspirations, celebrated for their winning combinations of pickup towing and hauling prowess and SUV-like ride quality and amenities. But only one pulls ahead where it matters most, from capability to accommodations and technologies, and that's Honda Ridgeline. See how it does here at King Auto Center in Lihue!

2019 Honda Ridgeline vs. 2019 Toyota Tacoma

  • A 280-horsepower, 3.5-liter SOHC V6 comes standard across the Honda Ridgeline lineup, capable of shelling out 262 pound-feet of torque. Base Toyota Tacoma SR models feature a 2.7-liter I4 that only delivers 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet. It can still only produce 278 horsepower with the 3.5-liter V6 that comes in later trims. That makes Honda Ridgeline the better accelerator and the harder worker.
  • Intelligent Variable Torque Management (i-VTM4) all-wheel drive is an option in Honda Ridgeline from its Sport and RTL trims to RTL-T, and it's standard in RTL-E and Black Edition trims. Toyota Tacoma offers only rear- and four-wheel-drive options, with 4x4 being optional; AWD isn't offered. Honda Ridgeline is therefore readier to hit the off-road right off the line.
  • Honda Ridgeline features an Intelligent Traction Management system with snow, sand, and mud modes available when you equip it with AWD, and you can do that as early as a step up to the Sport trim. In Toyota Tacoma, a comparable Multi-Terrain Select system only comes standard in the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trims.
  • Graduate to Honda Ridgeline Sport, and you gain the visibility improvement in iffy weather afforded by fog lights. You'll have to reach TRD Sport or TRD Off-Road to get them in Toyota Tacoma.
  • A one-touch power moonroof that can tilt appears in the midrange Honda Ridgeline RTL trim. You can only get one in Toyota Tacoma at the top of the line, and only in the double cab configuration.
  • Leather-trimmed, heated front seats with 10-way power-adjustability and power lumbar support for the driver come standard in Honda Ridgeline RTL. You can get leather in Toyota Tacoma, but only in the Limited trim, and only in double cab configurations. Seats come heated only in its TRD Pro trim, and they're only four-way-adjustable
  • Honda Ridgeline Sport features tri-zone auto climate control, a humidity control, and air filtration. Toyota Tacoma only makes a dual-zone variant available; there's no humidity control offered, you can only get the feature in the midrange and later, and only by investing in a package.
  • A 5-inch LCD and 200-watt, seven-speaker sound system come standard in base Honda Ridgeline trims. Midrange models upgrade to an 8-inch touch-screen Display Audio system complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a 225-watt sound system. Go top-of-the-line, and you gain a 540-watt, eight-speaker premium audio variant. The last is uniquely located in the truck bed, which makes it great for tailgate parties and other outdoor get-togethers. Toyota Tacoma only features six speakers in its base trim, only a 7-inch infotainment system appears at the midrange, neither Apple nor Android phone compatibility is available, and there's only a six-speaker JBL system at the top of the line.
  • Honda Ridgeline features Honda satellite-linked navigation with voice recognition and Honda HD Digital Traffic in its RTL-T trim, making it available just beyond the midrange. You can only get navigation standard at the top of the Toyota Tacoma line.
  • Flatten the tailgate of your Honda Ridgeline, and it'll support up to 300 pounds, with an optional 7.3-cubic-foot, lockable In-Bed Trunk that can accommodate an 82-quart ice chest. The trunk even incorporates a drain plug, enabling the storage area to double as a cooler for parties. These features are unique to Honda Ridgeline; they aren't offered in Toyota Tacoma.
