2019 Honda HR-V vs. 2019 Toyota RAV4

Find Out How the Honda HR-C Tops its Toyota Rival

When you're searching for a compact crossover SUV, you want to be sure that you're considering the top options in the class. Two of the most popular models are our Honda HR-V and the Toyota RAV4, with each having its fair share of fans -- and for good reason. Each is a stellar example of the reason this segment has been growing for years, so we thought it a good idea to compare them in a head-to-head competition. Read on to learn how things turned out.

We compared introductory trim levels of the two SUVs in order to keep things comparable, and the results were quite eye-opening. The Honda HR-V has a beginning Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price that's significantly lower than the MSRP for the base Toyota RAV4, allowing you to save thousands of dollars right from the start. Notably, the Honda HR-V retains a higher percentage of its original value after five years of ownership, so you'll get more return of your money when it's time to sell it or trade it in for a newer model.

The Honda HR-V offers a choice of two engine options, with both a 2.4-liter inline-four and a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four available. The RAV4 limits you to one engine, a 2.5-liter inline-four. While the RAV4's engine does deliver slightly better horsepower and torque numbers than either of the engines offered for the Honda HR-V, the difference is negligible at best and unlikely to be noticed when you're on the road.

One thing that you will notice, however, is that the Honda HR-V delivers the better city fuel efficiency numbers. Pair that added savings with the already-lower initial cost, and it's hard to ignore the fact that the HR-V delivers far better value.

Interior Comfort

The Honda HR-V offers greater front- and second-row legroom, and boasts the more expansive amount of passenger space. When you're looking to load cargo, the HR-V has a liftgate that raises in one piece to make things easier; the RAV4 has a swing-out door, which forces you to load from the passenger side only.

Both compact crossovers can be equipped with the modern tech touches that today's drivers demand, but it's noteworthy that the Honda HR-V features automatic, auto-off headlights as a standard feature on even the introductory model. The base RAV4 doesn't offer that convenience, which seems odd considering its higher starting price.

When you're out and about on Lihue roads, you want to feel secure in your travels. The Honda HR-V can be equipped with a rear electronic parking aid with a camera, a feature that's not offered for the RAV4. Otherwise, both compact crossover SUVs offer the standard safety features you want, such as traction control, electronic stability systems, and antilock brake systems.
